An Ending and a Beginning

We lost our bunny Viscount Peter suddenly this week. He was happily eating and running around a few hours earlier. When I got home he was stretched out as he usually was when he was sleeping but he had passed away sometime shortly after we went to work. No signs of infection, trauma, or struggle so it looks like he must have been asleep and had a sudden heart attack or stroke. If we had to lose him I am at least grateful that he went peacefully.

After a lot of discussion with the wife we decided to see if there was another bunny who needed rescuing from the local animal shelter. This is the county shelter as the nasty local city shelter closed down last year due to inept administration and lack of funds. The people seem very nice and sincere at the new shelter here but it is still a kill shelter. People are constantly coming in and callously dumping their unwanted pets. It looks like a "Bubba Convention" at times with all of the rednecks lined up with their array of poor dogs, cats, and bunnies, many of which will be killed because no one cares enough to give them a good home.

OK, end of rant. We saw a little bunny on Petfinder and he was still there Saturday so we interacted with him awhile. It was quickly apparent that he was a real lap bunny who loved petting and attention. We adopted him and he spent a couple of hours last night leaping in the air and marking territory around the house. He is now relaxing and munching hay in his cage. Let me introduce you all to Prince Dirk. I don't care about breeds but I looked him up and Dirk is a chocolate Dutch bunny. He is about one year old and is very happy to be in his forever home. Dirk was found in the middle of a street in downtown St. Augustine and probably was dumped by his former owner when they became tired of him.
